I also cannot put myself in your situation with LDL book publicy, most probably none of us, readers of your blog, knows more than 3 languages eitherway. And I doubt anyone who publishes a book that is and / or will be translated on tenths of languages can possibly “keep an eye” on every single edition of it that is released.
But I’m sure your great lecture already have and will attract even more interests so that it will eventually be translated to 30-50 languages :).

The only “sad” result that can possibly come out (since it’s not guaranteed) of that particular sub-title sentence translation is that it may not look as a professional book on a certain matter if it’s sold with such… trivialised slogan.

Naturally there is nothing to worry about the professional designers, I’m sure most of polish designers read your blogs and simply know what’s what, just that it may attract less potential customers, possibly making them think about it this way: oh it’s just another hyped up trend etc.

Perhaps (and most certainly) I’m just overreacting about the matter. I cannot call myself a designer yet, but I’m sure that all people who create something, whether art or not, would simply be disgusted in some way, when such a vital part of their work (in your case cover page and the title; I know – “don’t judge a book by it’s cover, but ont he other hand it is also essential) is treated so trivially.

This is the end of this post and I just realised that I’m writing about it as if it was my own book (haha), forgive me for that David, it’s all written in good faith :).

I just wanted to catch your attention about the polish translation of your book, done by Bartosz Sałbut. What caught my very negative attention was the front page itself, which can be seen here: http://helion.pl/okladki/326×466/loglov.jpg . What gave me that negative impression is the translation of the subtitle. “A Guide to Creating Iconic Brand Identities” has been translated in to “Design a great logotype!”. It changes the whole sense immensely, doesn’t it? And as you can see, whoever has done it, he didn’t even retain the original font you have used.

Thankfully it’s just the frontpage, book’s description itself seems to be fine. I can’t judge the quality of the translation, because I haven’t read your book yet. Though because of the poor cover translation I will not bother to buy it in my native language, I’ll simply go for the plain english version instead. That will allow me to read your thoughts accurately, without any unnecessary fixed meanings attached (wich I know is impossible to avoid when it comes to translating, but to do such a blooper on the cover?).

Not to make it sound like an apocalypse has happened, I’ll finish with saying that I really enjoy all of your projects (logodesignlove, identitydesigned and your personal site), the knowledge included there is simply invaluable.

Needless to tell you to keep up the good work because you just do it and will continue on doing it. So let me put it simply – thank you David!!!
