I can’t remember seeing a more impressive, in-depth brand identity project than what Moving Brands has done for HP.

“The once iconic brand was deemed dull and lifeless by consumers and business customers alike. The power of the portfolio could only be fully leveraged by aligning it under a single-minded story that could rally various businesses and over 300,000 employees world-wide behind a unified strategy and behaviours.”

You can, and should, view the full result here on the Moving Brands website. Watching the videos gives a taster of the massive scale of the project.

—

Update: 16 December 2011
The case study and all videos have been taken off the Moving Brands website, as discovered via Identity Works, with the following statement shown:

“We have removed the HP case study per the request of HP, in order to clarify the distinction between the aspects of the work that were setting a creative vision for the brand but were not implemented in the market, and the aspects which reflect the actual in-market applications of the Identity and Design System. The ‘Progress mark’ logo is not the go-forward direction for HP.”

—

My hat’s off, regardless of whether the new design is fully implemented. It’s a fascinating insight into an identity redesign for one of the world’s largest companies.

There’s a lot of gold in them there fields.

A great symbol design from the portfolio of Belfast-based Hamill Boskett Dempsey.

—

There’s a lot of gold in them there fields. At least there was in the fields of Broighter, Limavady. In 1896 a local ploughman, Thomas Nicholl unearthed Ireland’s most important archaeological find “The Broighter Hoard.” It’s now on the same land that golden rapeseed oil is harvested, cold-pressed and bottled by the Kane family. We created a strong elegant brand to position the oil as a premium local product. The symbol is our interpretation of the golden torque, one of the most impressive pieces in the hoard.

—

Quoted from the HBD website.

I love how the negative space in the stylised torque also gives the impression of oil flowing from the bottle.

Great improvement over the old Flash-based offering.

“johnson banks has been in business for nearly twenty years. Like any start-up we couldn’t be too choosy about our projects for a few years, but slowly we began to do what we really wanted — large, significant and important identity and branding projects.”

The good folk at johnson banks mightn’t think too much of my humble blogging efforts but their work is some of the best I’ve seen, and I thought it worth highlighting their newly-designed website.

“Our old website was, in its time, admired and of its time. But finally we’ve had some gaps to develop something more iPhone/iPad/iWhatevernext friendly.”

Quoted from Thought for the week.

In particular, the Identity & Branding section is worth a visit. The iconic Shelter design (UK-based) is one of the most appropriate I’ve seen.

I believe credit is due to Matt&George for their work on the site.

Great improvement over the old Flash-based offering (Not keen on those).

“We’ve been working with Austria’s largest telco company for the past year on a major relaunch of their brand. The result of a merger between the incumbent fixed line and mobile phone companies, the new brand focusses on convergent technologies. That’s why we created a visual identity that reflects the life of A1′s customers – vibrant and ever changing.”

The recent Big Ten logo received mixed reviews. Designer Michael Bierut responded.

“Trying to be clever with the math in terms of the name and logo doesn’t seem to be a game that anyone can win.

[...]

“Some of the most admired logos out there are quite simple. The previous Big Ten logo, for instance, is relatively straightforward. And there’s nothing simpler than the Nike symbol, which people usually name as an effective logo.”
— MICHAEL BIERUT

Read more on the Fast Company Co.Design site, via @logolounge.

According to the Co.Design piece, some armchair quarterbacks are “demanding the Big Ten eliminate the logo and crowdsource the design amongst its college sports enthusiasts.” Oh cringe.

Admittedly, I’m not too clued-in on US sports, but the Big Ten logo is one I’ve been familiar with for a while now (mainly because of its use of negative space to indicate the 11 institutions it represents).

“There will be people who would want us to be digitally correct with our name and our number, but I think we have 100-percent support of the people who have responsibility for these programs — in fact, it was a presidential directive that we maintain our name.”

I spoke a while back about shifting more towards the bigger brand identity picture, possibly even selling Logo Design Love. Since then I’ve been chatting with a number of fantastic designers/studios around the world who have kindly contributed case studies for this new venture.

The flat logo (above) was lifted from the Gravity Flooring website. I think the kerning looks a little off either side of the arrow due to the animation shown on the site, but I’m not sure.

I like the idea, and it’s good to see some humour thrown in, too.
