In 1975, and in response to the trends of blandness and similarity in the trademark design of the day, designer Jerry Herring, of Herring Design in Houston, produced a satirical pamphlet advertising “Stock Trade Marks.” It was reprinted in the March/April 1999 issue of Communication Arts, and with the recent happenings at iStock, now seems like a good time to remind everyone that cheap “design” is certainly nothing new.
