Designer Jens Wickelgren of The Chase takes credit for the gold winner at last years Fresh Awards. The execution shown on the Freedom website is slightly different.

The lack of space between the logotype on the site and the off-cut “bird” makes it seem less like “Freedom” and more like a mistake. I also can’t imagine that Wickelgren wanted the “Travel Group” text treated like an afterthought.

A great logotype idea, sadly not done justice online. Reminds me of the Guild of Food Writers logo by 300million.

The flat logo (above) was lifted from the Gravity Flooring website. I think the kerning looks a little off either side of the arrow due to the animation shown on the site, but I’m not sure.

I like the idea, and it’s good to see some humour thrown in, too.

The first annual Mediabistro Logo Awards “celebrates and promotes the best in logo design.”

The Art Directors Club are giving Logo Design Love readers 10 free entries to the 89th ADC Awards. That’s up to $3,000 worth, depending on your entry category. Read on for more info about the awards and for details on how to enter the draw.

About the ADC Awards

ADC is a self-funded, not-for-profit global member organization for a broad range of creatives around the world.

Every year since 1920, the ADC Annual Awards competition identifies and honours the best work of the year in visual communications. ADC’s first call for entries included just three categories: black and white illustration and design, paintings and drawings in color, and posters of all sizes. Today, the number of categories totals 238, spanning all areas in print and broadcast advertising, interactive media, graphic design, publication design, packaging, photography and illustration.

Of most interest to you will likely be the categories for “corporate identity programmes” and “logos or trademarks.”

Winners are presented at a special evening in New York City in April. The event includes a reception, multimedia awards presentation and party. The winners are also documented in the Art Directors Annual and their works displayed at the exhibition. Higher award winners are also included in ADC exhibitions that travel throughout North America, Europe, Asia and South America.

Individual entry costs are between $150 for singles, $200 for campaigns, and $300 for branding series. The ADC deadline for entries in the design category is Friday 22nd January — just one week away.

There are two ways to stand a chance of winning one of 10 free entries to the 89th ADC Awards.

All Benchmarks entrants are asked to demonstrate how their branding programmes or campaigns work across a variety of different communication platforms. While a single example of brilliance cannot win a Benchmark, a strong strategic concept, which can be shown to work effectively in a variety of areas, will be a lively contender within its category.

The 2009 Awards brought some interesting results, not least this category winner by The Partners.

Eagle Clean is a small London cleaning company which needed an identity that would engage prospective clients such as offices, restaurants, bars and clubs in a particularly uninspiring sector.

The Partners used Eagle Clean’s rubber gloves to develop a playful graphic device on signage and uniforms. The logo comes to life online as the gloves clean the screen, making it spotless to the viewer.

My thoughts

It’s impossible to effectively critique any logo design without information of the design brief, and I’d hope such info was presented to the jury. The previous logo, for One Degree (Best of Australia, Best of Oceania), was ultimately chosen as Best of the World (top prize). I can’t help but wonder if the reputation behind Landor Associates played a part. Excuse my synicism. In favour of the design, it’s simple, scalable, and memorable, although does look quite like a pictogram from the olympics. Perhaps that’s part of the appeal / rationale?

I am pleased to see the Sancti Spiritus logo selected in the Best of Europe category, as the idea is great. Some of the others, however, aren’t so convincing. What do you reckon?

My favourite design from all winners (Best of Nation included) is this logo, which won Best of Norway.

The LogoLounge 5 book is around the corner. If you want your own logo designs considered for inclusion, there are just 5 days remaining before the June 30th submission deadline.

The LogoLounge book series has proved very popular, and with approximately 18 months between publications, the deadline is one I thought you’d like to know about.

Submission timeframe

All logos that are submitted to LogoLounge.com between April 1st, 2007 and June 30th, 2008 will be judged for the publication of LogoLounge Book 5, to be published by Rockport Publications. Judging for this book is not limited to work produced during the above dates, providing it is submitted within the set timeframe.

To submit your logo designs for entry, you must sign-up for an annual subscription and upload your design(s) in the required size. Subscribing costs US$100 (approximately £50), and with it, you can search the LogoLounge database of over 80,000 logos, categorised by keywords (colour, typestyle, shape, form, subject, industry etc.).

I’ve been a LogoLounge member for a few weeks now, and it’s proving a useful source of inspiration. At the time of writing I’ve uploaded 20 of my own designs to the site. Therefore, I’ve submitted 20 logos for the book judges to review. Fingers crossed.

My top 3 logos from the awards winners

For those who don’t speak German, ‘Berliner Mauer’ is German for Berlin Wall. I’m sure many of you remember the scenes when the wall was broken through, and this simple logo design works in two ways. The geometric mark captures both the breaking of the wall, and helps separate the two words with the placing of the ‘gap’.

I also enjoy the simple logo for Sancti Spiritus Wines. The icon is practical, working well at small sizes because detail is kept to a minimum. The simplicity allows for ease of memorability, and it’s relevant – you can clearly understand how the mark relates to the product.

The OK monogram for the Fund of Social Communications appeals to me, mainly because of how easy it is to remember. Without an understanding of the brief, I can’t say just how effective it is. However, even though I haven’t seen the logo in some time, I distinctly remember it from the Eulda 2006 winners. That’s good going. The logo was designed back in 2004.

Building upon what I’ve just said, it’s difficult to accurately judge the effectiveness of logo designs without knowledge of the design brief, and the EDA website doesn’t offer much in the way of info. What appeals to you might not appeal to the target audience.

On a final note, it’s worth remembering that with any logo design awards, the overall quality is determined by the submissions (a point I needed to reiterate during the preliminary rounds of the Logo Design Love Awards).
