The writing is done and dusted, and my packaged InDesign files have been sent to Peachpit‘s production team. All that’s left now is the wait between press, post-press, and shipping. Given how this is my first book, it’s going to be strange when actually I get to hold a copy.

To let you see how the pages look, I’ve just uploaded a few inside images to the Logo Design Love Facebook page—launched today.

Anyone who becomes a “fan” of the page will automatically be entered into a book giveaway drawn on December 18th (the day the book is scheduled to be warehoused for shipping).

If you don’t use Facebook, no worries. There’ll be more copies given away here.

I know not everyone will buy a copy, and for those who don’t, I’m planning to give you a full chapter as a free PDF download. More on that later.

This is the first time I’ve created a Facebook fan page—which Vivien can attest to (thanks for the settings help!)—and I notice that fans are able to upload photos to the page. So I got thinking, if you fancy sharing any of your design work, I’m more than happy to feature the most “liked” logos here on the blog—perhaps at the end of each month, depending on whether you’re interested.

Punctuation-inspired logo designs. But none can match Pentagram’s Curious Pictures logo.

LEGO logos.

Google and LEGO have a fun and special history… The Google company founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, are both avid lovers of LEGO toys, as are many of the company’s employees.

New Nickelodeon identity. More contemporary, with consistency across networks, but more corporate and I’m not sure about the uppercase K.

Typembrya—a homage to Herb Lubalin’s Mother & Child logo.

Is it time to retire the black and white logo? Ben Terrett poses a question that brings an overwhelming response in favour of ‘no’. A good thing too, with many of today’s aspiring graphic designers being exposed to an ‘online-only’ kind of world.

What is the logo worth? Michael Surtees talks about how “logos as we know them are dead”. The post mentions how in the past, organisations thought a fresh logo would help change their fortunes. I hope they don’t still think that way.

Should there be a law against logos? David the designer muses over logos that communicate nothing. I don’t know about you, but I’m liking the sound of being paid for ‘not’ designing.

Pentagram: Marks — 400 Symbols and Logotypes — is available for purchase in a limited edition print of 1,000 copies.

Published by Laurence King, Pentagram: Marks serves as a logo gallery for what is perhaps the most respected design agency on the planet. Logos are displayed in black and white, to focus on the “unique pictorial or abstract symbols”, and each has been allocated a separate page.

Five bookmarking ribbons are sown into the spine, which makes it easy to keep your favourite designs close-at-hand. My only regret is that there aren’t more!

The 2wice logo, from 1997, identifies the visual and performing arts magazine that’s published twice a year.

Above-right is the D&AD logo from 1962, for the international association that represents the creative, design and advertising industries.

The Curious Pictures logo was designed in 1993 for a mixed media, live action, animation and computer graphics studio.

Above-left is the Fine Line Features logo, created in 1991 for the film production company.

The Fashion Center logo identifies the business improvement district that encourages the development of New York’s Garment District.
