There are certain logo design conventions that are taught in class. Simplicity, practicality and a few others. So when I see a logo design such as the Tate (hugely successful UK gallery), I wonder if sometimes conventions are there to be broken. Allow me to provide a little insight.

Since first appearing in the early 1900s, the Shell logo has moved from a realistic rendering of a pecten, or scallop shell, to today’s bold shape with distinctive colours. In this short article I offer a glimpse into the evolving design, and how it has grown to become so recognisable.
